In the industrial sector, tanks are containers used to hold and store various fluids, such as chemicals, oil, clean water, and wastewater, etc. Unlike pressure vessels, their contents are not kept under pressure and are held safely for short-term or long-term periods. They are available in several designs, varying in material, size, and shape. Two of the most common configurations are rectangular tanks and cylindrical tanks (also sometimes referred to as circular tanks).

At Houston PolyTank, we fabricate both rectangular and cylindrical tanks. Below we outline our cylindrical tank capabilities.

Vertical, Cylindrical Tanks — Benefits of Extrusion Wound Plastic Tanks

Cylindrical extrusion-wound plastic tanks carry unique advantages that make them suitable for different applications. For example:

  •       Plastic extrusion-wound cylindrical tanks are corrosion resistant even when used as reactors or storage applications for chemicals such as acids and bases and demonstrate low maintenance and longer service life.
  •       The superior extrusion-wound plastic tanks do not bulge when being frequently emptied and filled. The cylinder of the tank has a continuous thickness from top to bottom. This eliminates elephant feet as shown in roto-molded tanks which cause cracks near the bottom of the tank.
  •       The extrusion-wound plastic tanks and fittings can be modified and/or repaired on-site.
  •       Our extrusion-wound plastic tanks are custom and versatile.

o   Open top, flat top, cone top, recessed top

o   Flat bottom, slope bottom, cone bottom

o   Secondary Containment

o   As many fittings needed and size of fittings; 150# and 300# ANSI flanges available

o   Side Manway Option

o   Large range of accessories/attachments: Ladders, Handrails, Mixer Mounts, Immersion Heaters, LiquiLevel Indicators, etc.

Historically, industry professionals tended to use cylindrical tanks in biological treatment operations in wastewater treatment plants and chemical industries.

Materials Used in Extrusion Wound Process

Our cylindrical storage tanks are made from extruded high-density linear polyethylene (HDLPE) or polypropylene, depending on the needs of the customers. The materials demonstrate the following properties:

  •       Heat resistance up to 120° F (for HDPLE) and 180°F to 200° F (for polypropylene)
  •       High workability for extrusion and fabrication operations
  •       Chemical resistance for acidic and alkaline compounds (pH 0-14)
  •       Low moisture adsorption
  •       High tensile and compressive strength

Industries and Applications

We offer cylindrical tanks suitable for use in the following industrial applications:

Chemical Industry

The chemical industry uses plastic tanks as a method of storage or reactor for chemical processes. If needed, they use a secondary containment tank option. We offer chemical storage tanks in several variations—i.e., single wall with a containment area and double wall with/without a containment area—to ensure chemical compounds remain safely stored and separated from the outer environment.

Electrical Industry

As the alternative energy industries expand, so too does the need for storing electricity such as flow battery storage systems. Our large extrusion-wound polyethylene and polypropylene tanks allow flow battery storage companies to store large amounts of electrical energy generated by renewable energy sources, such as wind farms and solar fields.

Water and Wastewater Industry

Water and wastewater facilities use our tanks for processing and treatment operations. Depending on the size of the tank, they can hold and store 55 to 20,000 gallons of treatment chemicals. Our extrusion-wound tanks are the perfect storage for chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite, sodium bisulfite, phosphate, ammonium hydroxide, ferric sulfate, and more.
